Teacher Rachel
Favorite Ballet Storytime Story
I love that we include Serenade in our curriculum. It’s one of my favorite ballets and scores, and I think it’s wonderful that our young dancers are introduced not only to beloved classics like The Nutcracker and Sleeping Beauty, but also iconic works by twentieth-century choreographers like George Balanchine.
Favorite Ballet Step
I love teaching jumps like sautés, échappés, and grand jetés. There is something very joyful and freeing about flying through the air, and I love seeing young dancers discover that feeling for themselves.
Do you have a go-to animal for inspiration during Animal Dances?
I often use music to inspire dancers to embody different animals. For example, Basilio’s variation from Don Quixote reminds me of elephants marching with confidence and energy, so I use it for students as they practice marching like an elephant.
Favorite Thing About Teaching at Tutu School
Some of my earliest and happiest memories are of taking creative movement and pre-ballet classes at my preschool beginning when I was two years old. I still remember my ballet teacher from that time. Knowing how much those experiences shaped my love of dance makes me excited to create those same lasting memories for Tutu School’s young dancers.
