From One Ballet Mama to Another
A love letter to the magic of Tutu School
If you had told me a few years ago that a tiny ballet class would change the trajectory of my life, I’m not sure I would have believed you.
But that’s exactly what happened.
My daughter Sloane started ballet when she was just one and a half years old. Like many parents, I was simply looking for an activity for my COVID baby as things were starting to open again. Something gentle, something creative, a place where she could make friends…where we both could!
What we found was so much more.
From the very first class at Tutu School, it felt… different.
There was no pressure.
No expectation of perfection.
No rigid structure that made little ones feel like they had to “get it right.”
Instead, there was imagination.
Storytelling.
Magic.
It was a place where tiny dancers could twirl when they wanted to twirl, observe when they needed to observe, and slowly (at their own pace) fall in love with movement.
As a mom, it was a breath of fresh air.

A Different Kind of Ballet Beginning
My own introduction to ballet as a child was much more traditional. Structured, disciplined, and at times, intimidating.
So when I stepped into that first Tutu School class with her, I immediately felt the difference.
Here, ballet wasn’t about being perfect.
It was about:
- building confidence
- nurturing creativity
- and allowing each child to blossom in their own time
I watched her light up in a way I hadn’t expected.
She wasn’t being corrected. She was being encouraged.
And that changed everything.
When One Class Becomes a Calling
I didn’t just love the experience for my child… I believed in it.
So deeply that I knew I wanted to be part of sharing it with other families.
Within six months of attending that very first class, my husband and I opened Tutu School Shoreline in our neighborhood.
It wasn’t just a business decision.
It was a mission.
A mission to create a space where children could experience ballet in a way that felt joyful, supportive, and full of wonder.

Not Every Class Looked Like Magic
And to be completely honest…
My daughter was often the child:
- gazing out the window, counting cars
- holding tightly to a prop she wasn’t quite ready to give back
- feeling very strongly about wanting a specific color dot on the floor
- often deciding she wasn’t going to do her solo
There were moments we left class early.
Moments that felt hard.
Moments where I wondered if we should even keep coming.
And yet… we did.
Because I knew Tutu School wasn’t about getting it “right.”
It’s about giving children the space to show up exactly as they are.
Even on the hard days.
Especially on the hard days.
Watching Confidence Bloom
Over the years, I’ve had the incredible privilege of watching my daughter grow from the tiniest of twirlers to now a proud Primary Prep dancer at six years old.
She has participated in eight ballet recitals.
And if you had seen her in those early days feeling unsure, hesitant, and sometimes overwhelmed, you would understand just how big that is.
Eight recitals.
And each one has been less about “performing” and more about celebrating.
Celebrating bravery.
Celebrating growth.
Celebrating the simple magic of stepping onto a stage and saying, “I can do this.”
Our Bravo Bash recitals are intentionally designed to feel different with low pressure, joy, and support.
And I’ve watched firsthand how that approach allows children to shine in their own way.

The Magic Comes Home
One of my very favorite things?
Watching the magic follow her home.
She now teaches her little sister ballet in the living room by guiding her through steps, demonstrating movements, and encouraging her just like her teachers do.
It’s the sweetest full-circle moment.
Seeing her not just learn, but embody confidence, leadership, and kindness.
(And if you ask me… she’s already well on her way to becoming a Tutu Teacher someday!)
Why It Matters
As a mom, I know matters most isn’t whether our children become perfect dancers.
It’s whether they:
- feel confident trying something new
- feel safe expressing themselves
- and feel proud of who they are
That’s what Tutu School gave to us.
And it’s what we strive to give to every single dancer who walks through our doors.
From My Family to Yours
Whether your child is twirling across the room,
hiding behind your leg…
or simply watching from the sidelines…
There is a place for them here.
Because at Tutu School, ballet isn’t about perfection.
It’s about finding your own kind of magic.
If you’ve been thinking about trying a class, I hope you’ll join us.
You just never know where that very first twirl might lead!
