Why Our Tutu Teachers Are the Heart of Tutu School Renton

There is something I look for every time I meet a potential Tutu Teacher, and it has very little to do with how extensive their ballet background is.

I look for the sparkle.

You can see it when someone who genuinely loves children begins talking with one. Their face lights up. They naturally meet the child where they are. And almost immediately, you can feel that little magnetic pull of a child who realizes, this person gets me.

Of course, ballet experience matters. Every teacher at Tutu School Renton brings a robust ballet foundation into the studio, and that knowledge grounds our classes in foundational, age-appropriate technique.

But that genuine love of children? That comes first for us.

Because when you’re introducing ballet to children as young as six months old, knowing ballet is only part of the job. Knowing how to share it with a two-year-old, four-year-old, or seven-year-old is something entirely different.

And that’s where our Tutu Teachers really shine.

No Two Tutu Teachers Are Exactly Alike

One of my favorite things about our teaching team is just how different they all are.

Every Tutu Teacher works from the same curriculum and shares the same commitment to creating a joyful, nurturing introduction to ballet. But we don’t expect every teacher to teach exactly the same way.

Their personalities are part of what makes their classes magical.

One teacher may have a gift for storytelling. Another can make an entire room of toddlers giggle with one silly voice. Some bring beautiful musicality or years of technical ballet experience. Others have an incredible ability to draw a hesitant dancer into the circle without ever making them feel pressured.

They each bring their own talents, experiences, creativity, and energy into the studio.

And aren’t we lucky that they do?

Before a Tutu Teacher Ever Walks Into the Studio

There’s quite a bit of preparation that happens before a teacher ever leads one of our children’s ballet classes at Tutu School Renton.

Even experienced ballet teachers begin by learning what makes teaching ballet at Tutu School different. Through training, observation, co-teaching, and ongoing support, they learn the structure behind our classes, explore our extensive activity and music libraries, become familiar with Ballet Storytime, and deepen their understanding of how young children learn and develop.

Our teachers learn how the curriculum grows alongside our dancers, from their earliest experiences with music and movement through increasingly challenging ballet technique. They learn how to take everything they know about ballet and share it in a way that is meaningful, engaging, and developmentally appropriate for the child standing in front of them.

And once they’re teaching independently, that preparation doesn’t stop.

There’s always another Ballet Storytime to prepare, another milestone to explore, choreography to learn, music to know, and a room full of individual dancers to think about before class even begins.

There Are a Lot of Layers Underneath All Those Twirls

When you peek into class, you might see scarves flying through the air, dancers galloping across the floor, a circle of pliés, or ten little ballerinas pretending to be characters from a famous ballet.

What you don’t necessarily see are all the layers underneath it.

Each month, our classes center around a developmental milestone. That milestone is broken into age-appropriate skills that build throughout the month, so what our Baby Ballet dancers are exploring will look very different from what our Primary Ballet Prep dancers are practicing.

Then we layer in foundational ballet technique.

And music.

And imaginative movement.

And our Ballet Storytime curriculum, which introduces dancers to the stories, characters, composers, and music of famous ballets.

Within Ballet Storytime is another theme to explore, and for our older dancers, we add a Step of the Month, a more challenging ballet step such as frappé or chaîné turns. These are steps dancers may encounter in more traditional ballet studios if they continue dancing beyond our Tutu School Renton walls, or simply recognize onstage when they watch ballet in the future.

It all looks like play, and much of it is play.

But underneath the play is a teacher keeping track of quite a lot.

We Keep Coming Back Around

One thing I especially love about the curriculum we’ve honed at Tutu School Renton is the intentional way it circles back.

In January, for example, we focus on musicality and rhythm, but we’re really just shining a brighter spotlight on something that’s already a cornerstone of every Tutu School class. When January ends, our dancers don’t stop listening to music, finding the beat, or discovering how their movement connects to what they hear.

Instead, we introduce a new focus while continuing to revisit and build upon everything that came before. Over time, those skills overlap again and again, becoming more familiar and more natural as our dancers grow.

Our teachers are the ones quietly weaving all of those threads together.

And Then the Children Walk Through the Door

A teacher can prepare a beautiful lesson, know exactly which activities she wants to use, have the music ready, and understand precisely what skill she’s hoping to develop.

And then ten incredible, completely unique children walk through the door, each bringing whatever their day has held so far.

One is bursting with energy. One had a hard morning and needs a few extra minutes before joining the circle. Someone desperately wants to demonstrate everything. Someone else would prefer to watch first. A dancer who participated enthusiastically last week might need a little more reassurance today.

That’s teaching young children.

The lesson plan matters. The preparation matters. But so does being able to look at the children in front of you and recognize what they need from you that day.

Our Tutu Teachers get to know their dancers. They discover who responds to a little silliness, who wants a challenge, who needs a quieter invitation, and when a child simply needs another moment before trying again.

Our Tutu Tone guides the way we communicate, encourage, redirect, and celebrate. But just like our teachers, our dancers are individuals. The goal isn’t to make every child respond in exactly the same way. It’s to help each of them find joy, connection, and success in movement.

That takes technical knowledge.

But it also takes patience, intuition, creativity, flexibility, and an extraordinary amount of heart.

Our Ballet Teachers Are the Heart of Tutu School Renton

Our curriculum gives our teachers a foundation. Their training gives them tools. Their ballet backgrounds give them the technical knowledge to introduce this beautiful art form thoughtfully.

But they are the ones who bring it all to life.

They’re the ones who remember who loves to be chosen as the leader. They notice the first time a dancer balances on one foot without help. They know who has been working up the courage to join an activity and celebrate when today is finally the day.

They bring their preparation, creativity, patience, energy, knowledge, and personalities into our studio every single week.

And somewhere between the pliés and pirouettes, Ballet Storytime and Animal Activities, something even more special happens: relationships are built.

The next time you peek through the studio window and see your dancer laughing with their teacher, carefully practicing a new ballet step, or galloping through an imaginary world, I hope you see just a little more of what’s happening underneath all that joy.

There are so many layers that go into creating a Tutu School class.

But standing right in the middle of them is a wonderful teacher who has chosen to share their time, talent, energy, and magic with our dancers.

We couldn’t be more grateful that they have.
