Teacher Hannah
Favorite Ballet Storytime Story
My favorite story from the curriculum is Swan Lake. The music is extravagant and dramatic, and it allows dancers to explore and portray a wide array of emotions. They do a celebration dance like they're at a ball, they pretend to be sneaky and mysterious like VonRothbart, and they even dance like Odette and Prince Sigfried who must say goodbye to a dear friend. Swan Lake not only shares the message "there is nothing more powerful than love," but also that there is room for big feelings in the world.
Favorite Ballet Step
My go-to step to perform and teach is grand battements! There's no better feeling than to send your toes flying up in the air. It's a fun step to teach because there are always more opportunities to add on technique. First, dancers practice their balance and coordination with kicking, and then as they grow, we can add more challenges like pointing our toes, sitting up tall, and adding port de bras.
Do you have a go-to animal for inspiration during Animal Dances?
My go-to inspiration for animal dances is the octopus. It's so exciting for dancers to imagine swimming or floating in the water. I give each dancer two ribbons to be their "tentacles" and let them dance and pop bubbles like they're twirling under the sea!
