Tutu School’s Equity Statement
The founding principle of Tutu School is this: Every child should know what it feels like to dance. Every child.
It is unequivocally the policy of Tutu School to welcome, celebrate, and support all students.
Students with physical or neurological differences, students from any religious, racial, or cultural background, and students of all genders are welcome at Tutu School.
Ballet is for everyone and for everybody. At Tutu School, we firmly believe that. We believe that ballet is more beautiful when differences are honoredhonoured and celebrated in the studio and on the stage – and importantly, especially, we believe in equal opportunity and access to every studio and every stage.
For too long, though, the broader world of ballet has not included everyone, and has not been a safe and nurturing space for all dancers. As an organizationorganisation that exists to introduce children to the magic of ballet, we know that we sit in a unique position – and bear a unique responsibility – to usher our students into a future ballet world that is a better ballet world – one committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Here are a few of the ways in which we are committing to this work – both at Tutu School, as well as outside of its studios:
AT TUTU SCHOOL:
- We will center diversity and inclusion in the visual representations of our brand, and in all of our messaging.
- We will promote inclusivity and celebrate diversity within our curriculum, teacher training materials, and other internal content.
- We will commit to ongoing diversity, equity, and inclusion training and support for our faculty members.
- We will support Tutu School owners in promoting diversity through scholarships and faculty recruitment, and in ensuring that Tutu School is an equitable place to dance and teach.
IN THE BROADER BALLET WORLD:
- We will support scholarship opportunities and actively seek partnerships that will promote diversity and inclusion in the ballet world. As a part of this commitment, we will continue our sponsorship of the Tiny Dancer Scholarship, as a proud partner of Brown Girls Do Ballet.
- We will promote and support professional development opportunities for dance educators – and future dance educators – in the communities Tutu School serves.
- We will assemble and support a council committed to guiding and advising Tutu School on the role it can play in building a better ballet world for future generations of dancers.
We believe that every child should know what it feels like to dance, and we know the transformative role that ballet can play in shaping and enriching a life. That kind of magic should belong to everyone, and we are committed to the work that will ensure it does.
