✨Ballet for Babies? We’re so Glad You Asked. ✨
The Joy of Play and Connection
We know what you might be thinking — how in the world does a baby learn ballet? But don’t worry, we aren’t putting tiny toes into pointe shoes just yet.
Our Baby Ballet division introduces our youngest twirlers to the magic of movement and music. Each class includes 35 minutes of teacher-guided activities followed by 10 minutes of open play and caregiver social time.
At Tutu School, we believe every child should know what it feels like to dance. After 17 years of helping toddlers find joy in ballet, we thought — why not babies too?
Studies show that music plays a crucial role in developing little minds. It strengthens fine motor skills, memory, speech, and so much more. When paired with movement-based activities, this combination supports motor skills, social-emotional development, and cognitive growth. It’s not just a dance class — it’s a joyful opportunity for your baby to move, learn, and connect.
What to Expect in Baby Ballet
In each class, you and your baby will explore movement in a safe, nurturing environment. Teachers lead guided activities using baby-safe props, engaging music, and imaginative play. Every dancer and caregiver receives a mat for floor stretches and gentle exercises.
Here’s a peek at some of the props you might see:
- Plastic Mirrors: Perfect for developing self-recognition and exploring facial expressions.
- Ribbon Rings and Wands: Great for encouraging coordination and visual tracking.
- Small, Soft Balls: Help strengthen tiny hands and improve fine motor skills.
- Foam Mats: Provide a soft, safe surface for crawling, rolling, and exploring.
Every prop is carefully chosen for its developmental benefits and safety. All of our Tutu Teachers complete specialized training in both dance and early childhood development, ensuring that every activity is meaningful and appropriate for your little one.

Tutu Teachers are trained to use class props in a variety of ways that stimulate development

Developmental Milestones We Celebrate
In Baby Ballet, we lovingly think of our dancers in two groups: crawlers and walkers. This allows our teachers to tailor each class to your baby’s stage of development.
By around 3 months, infants start recognizing familiar faces and objects. Between 4 to 6 months, most babies can roll over and explore cause-and-effect through sounds and gestures. By 6 months, many can differentiate tones of voice — a perfect time to introduce music and storytelling.
Each class offers opportunities to support these milestones in a playful, loving setting. And while there are research-based guidelines for development, we celebrate that every baby grows at their own perfect pace.
All of this is a key indicator that your baby is ready for Baby Ballet and is eager for the stimulation provided by dancing, music, and group play!
A Special Experience for Caregivers
Baby Ballet isn’t just for babies — it’s a joyful experience for caregivers, too! While we do ask grown-ups to participate in activities like lifting, swaying, and demonstrating simple movements, you’ll never be asked to perform a pirouette (unless you want to).
This class is also a wonderful opportunity to meet other caregivers. Every session ends with 10 minutes of open play and social time, where you can connect with others navigating the early months of parenthood. Whether it’s your first baby or your fifth, having a community matters.
Our hope is that Baby Ballet becomes a highlight in your week — a time to bond with your baby, meet new friends, and move together in a safe, welcoming space.
Ballet Storytime: A Tutu School Tradition
One of the most enchanting parts of a Tutu School class is our Ballet Storytime. Even our littlest dancers get to experience it!
Each week, teachers introduce a famous ballet through beautiful illustrations and classic music. Rather than reading an entire story, teachers highlight key images and simple ideas to engage little eyes and ears.
Why is this important?
Reading aloud boosts language and memory development, while bright, colorful pictures capture attention. Hearing words paired with images helps babies learn new sounds and meanings.
During Ballet Storytime, babies get their first introduction to ballets like The Nutcracker, Swan Lake, and Balanchine’s Jewels. We pair these classics with baby favorites like Wheels on the Bus, ensuring every class feels familiar and magical.
Music has a powerful effect on infants. It supports emotional and physical well-being, improves concentration, and encourages creativity. At Tutu School, we believe classical music and joyful tunes alike should be part of every little one’s world.
